not sarcastic. at all.

my first school of rock adult performance was held at the fixin’ to on 6.17.23. this was the day before father’s day, and my friend and fabulous photographer jonya captured some rad photos as a gift. but first, the show poster:

here’s what i played:

  • Drain You
  • When I Come Around (vocals)
  • Black Hole Sun
  • Love Me Two Times
  • Would?
  • Guerrilla Radio
  • Hawaii Five-O

over the course of the season, the mechanics of my kick technique changed (growing pains?), and i had a few days of panic when I couldn’t keep drain you rolling. fortunately, after a few days, my kick speed was back to normal. i’m still a little peeved at wayan (our show director) for suggesting i was just getting old when i first shared my dilemma 😆.

black hole sun was my challenge song. i was familiar with a lot of soundgarden, but never before considered how awesome a drummer matt cameron was, nor how complicated many other of the band’s tracks were (liberal and effective use of odd time). eye opener.

my favorite this round had to be would? the groove is so dark, and fills so much fun to play. observing videos of how sean kinney played this track helped me orchestrate the hits, which includes dramatic left-hand crashes in the chorus. at least i thought it looked cool, whipping his arm back. for this one i got to use my wuhan china, though i wish we’d also had someone to play a vibraslap to complete the mood.

in the final few weeks of the season i picked up guerrilla radio due to a drummer dropping the group. i really enjoyed playing this one, and appreciate the ode to immigrant song before the start of each verse.

dang. hawaii five-o was FAST. the energy from the band when we closed with this set was frickin’ fabulous.

oh, and here’s a sampling of jonya’s shots:
